Employment Rights (Increase of Limits) Order 2007
 
The Order increases, from 1 February 2008, the limits applying to certain awards of employment tribunals, and other amounts payable under employment legislation.
 
The maximum compensation in an unfair dismissal case increased to £63,000. The maximum weekly pay to be taken into account when calculating statutory redundancy payments and the basic award in unfair dismissal claims increased to £330.

Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007

On 6 April, the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 came into force, creating a new offence of corporate manslaughter in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and in Scotland the offence of corporate homicide.

Occupational and Personal Pension Schemes (Consultation by Employers and Miscellaneous Amendment) Regulations 2006

Employers with 50 or more employees must now inform and consult employees about significant changes in any occupational scheme they offer, or personal pension schemes to which they contribute, by a direct payment arrangement on behalf of their staff.

National minimum wage increases

The main (adult) rate of the national minimum wage rises from £5.52 to £5.73 per hour. In addition, the development rate increases from £4.60 to £4.77 and rate for workers aged 16 and 17 increases from £3.40 to £3.53 per hour. There are also changes to the regime of penalising employers that fail to comply with national minimum wage legislation.

Contractual benefits during Additional Maternity leave

Recent amendments to the law means that women whose expected week of childbirth begins on or after 5 October 2008 will be entitled to the same contractual benefits during Additional Maternity leave as they receive during Ordinary maternity leave.
