| Small businesses provide the backbone of virtually all economies. In Britain, figures from the Office for National Statistics suggest that small businesses employ almost half of the working population, fully 22.4 million people (47.1% of the labour force), and produce £2,600 billion worth of goods and services (37.2% total turnover).
